Self-Care Begins at Home

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately experienced a sense of calm? How about walking into a room and immediately wanting to walk out? First impressions signal to the brain that you have entered a safe environment—or not—and the way we first experience a room is no different.

Self-care is a broad term, and more recently a buzz-word, for all of the things we do to be good to ourselves. So when you reach for that glass of wine or settle in to that yoga pose, let’s not forget the place where self-care truly begins: your home. Take a deep breath, get cozy, and read on to see how a few small changes can transform your home into a self-care oasis.

Incorporate elements that encourage healthy sleep

Let’s begin in the bedroom. Quality sleep is essential for mental and physical health and contributes to your overall wellbeing. A soft color palette—think creamy white, pastel blush, foggy seaside blue—will reduce stress and anxiety and create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom. Textures and fabrics that pamper and soothe—a cashmere throw, linen sheets—will lull you to sleep. Counting sheep will be a thing of the past!

Bring the outdoors into your space

No, not literally! However, letting in natural light and adding living plants to a space has some serious health benefits. Studies show that day-lit environments boost vitamin D, ward off depression, and improve sleep. Adding some greenery evokes the soothing sense of nature and and purifies the air in your home. Pick up a couple of leafy green house plants, open up your drapes, scrub those windows squeaky clean, and let the light shine in.

Add a personal touch

Curating pieces with a personal connection to your life story can help promote a human connection and encourage you to be present while at home. Vignettes with personal artifacts and treasures conjure up sweet memories and good juju. The key is to select quality over quantity—shine the spotlight on a single family photo, a beloved piece of kids art, a jar of beach glass, or a painting from your favorite vacation. Rotate and rearrange these items as often as the spirit moves you. Putting this unique stamp on your space is guaranteed to give you all the feels every time you pass by.

At Peg Kusner Design, we understand the deep connection that exists between you and your home, and the importance of bringing self-care to your front door.
